The fallout continues around VeriSign's decision to axe third-level .name domains1 with Kevin Murphy at Domain Incite reporting that Patrik Fältström (owner of stupid.domain.name for over 25 years) has filed a Request for Reconsideration with ICANN2. Despite what its name may lead you to believe, I think it's a great.domain.name and it made me wonder which other related 3LDs would be affected. It was originally announced that the 2LDs orphaned by the culling of the 3LDs would become available for registration after one year which wouldn't be great for Patrik (or Neil Fraser). And if domain.name did go on the market it seems likely it would be highly sought after and would probably be classed as a premium name with a premium price to match (which is even before a domain "investor" snaps it up and tries to flip it for more). While Neil potentially (and hopefully) doesn't have any current competition for fraser.name, here are some other sites with a potential claim to the domain.name domain name.
www.domain.name
Maybe www.domain.name won't be too big a loss to the internet, though there is a certain charm to its incongruous design. The certificate expired in 2025, the News link is not actually a link and most of the links on the page are just linking through to other domain sellers. There's even one for the kids offering blockchain domains (which links through to Unstoppable). Curiously, a simple graphic of the website's name in yellow Times New Roman on a dark-blue background is being offered as a pack of 50 cards for £13.20 on Zazzle3.
host.domain.name
And host.domain.name no longer even resolves to a IP address though RDAP shows it as still registered until July 20274 (and since 2003). The Internet Archive's Wayback Machine shows it parked with Sedo as recently as May 2010 but back in 2003 (pictured above) it was some sort of Usenet newsgroup listing.
www.omic.domain.name
This one actually seems to be a proper website though it's not available at the 3LD, it's only accessible on www.omic.domain.name - their main domain seems to be omic.ltd so maybe they are not too concerned about losing the .name address. With the name Sub@omic Limited their main domain allows a neat email address: sub@omic.ltd. For a company offering web design services they sure have some... interesting... design choices on their page, like that £95.00 yellow price sticker.
the.domain.name
Another one gone from DNS but not forgotten, is the catchy the.domain.name. The Wayback Machine shows it active in July last year. Considering the entire business model seemed to be preying on expired domains (presumably to hold them ransom to the original owner who maybe inadvertently let them lapse) I wouldn't have been sad to see this one go.
some.domain.name
There is a website served up at some.domain.name though it's just a Wordpress blog with a single post from 2017 and doesn't have HTTPS configured. The About page shows that the owner is still active on the Stack Overflow network5 and is using the email provided by the 3LD .name service (some@domain.name) which could be a major headache if they have been using it since at least 2017 (and maybe even since 2008, according to RDAP6).
registered.domain.name
I also foudn a website at registered.domain.name but it's just a holding page saying it's a host for a Finnish company called ZeroDistance7. It doesn't have HTTPS configured but that's maybe because, as it suggests, it's just used for email and/or IRC (there is an MX record in DNS but no irc subdomain).
ultimate.domain.name
By far the weirdest one I found is ultimate.domain.name (and they also point premium.domain.name to it) which is some sort of abomination produced by Grok and then seemingly published as a website with absolutely no vetting whatsoever. I'm not sure exactly what it's trying to achieve - some sort of ranking of domain names? Though the criteria they're trying to list is completely incoherent and anything you click on links to a Google Gemini session preconfigured with a question you never wanted to ask. I like that they tried to equate their abc.defghijklmnopqrstuvw.xyz domain with Google's abc.xyz (and you'll never guess what their invaluable monstrosity of a domain links to). Maybe this is the website that convinced VeriSign to nuke the entire .name 3LD ecosystem.
